Sensex Options Trading Hits Record High Amid October Market Volatility
· Business · LiveMint, Bloomberg
Heightened market volatility in October drove Sensex options volumes on the BSE to a record average daily premium turnover of ₹35,481 crore. This represents a 53% increase from the previous month, as traders responded to significant market swings. The NSE also experienced its highest index options volume since March 2026, with an average daily turnover of ₹63,227 crore. Markets were influenced by rising oil prices and geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which caused the Sensex to hit a 52-week low on 1 October. The index subsequently staged a recovery, contributing to the record-breaking trading activity.
Why it matters
The surge in options trading reflects how Indian retail and institutional traders are increasingly using derivatives to navigate and profit from extreme market volatility.
