Serious Criminal Cases Pending Against 14 State Chief Ministers

Amicus curiae Vijay Hansaria has informed the Supreme Court that 14 of India's 28 chief ministers currently face serious criminal cases. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy leads the list with 89 pending cases, followed by West Bengal's Suvendu Adhikari with 29 and both Karnataka's D Shivakumar and Andhra Pradesh's N Chandrababu Naidu with 19 each. The report further highlights that 170 Lok Sabha MPs and 75 Rajya Sabha members have serious criminal charges pending against them. As of July 2026, a total of 4,192 criminal cases remain under trial against sitting and former legislators across the country. Hansaria has requested the Supreme Court to designate special courts for these trials and direct high courts to monitor their progress.
