Seven Dead, Nine Chinese Workers Missing After Fire at Russia Gas Chemical Complex

Seven people were killed and nine Chinese workers remain missing after a fire broke out on Tuesday at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex in Russia's far eastern Amur region, the plant said on Telegram. A total of 152 people were treated for injuries, with 36 taken to hospitals and others being airlifted to facilities elsewhere in Russia. The Amur Gas Chemical Complex is a joint project of Russian petrochemical company Sibur and Chinese oil and gas company Sinopec, and had not yet begun operations as it was preparing to start production. Russia's Investigative Committee is examining the incident as a potential breach of industrial safety regulations. Once operational, the facility is expected to produce 2.3 million metric tonnes of polyethene and 400,000 tonnes of polypropylene annually, making it one of the world's largest plants of its kind.
