Seven people were killed when a stampede broke out at Ashok Dham temple in Lakhisarai district, Bihar, on Monday morning. District magistrate Shailendra Kumar said the crush began at about 6:40 a.m. when some youngsters broke through barricades that were set to control the crowd. Witnesses claim the tragedy stemmed from inadequate crowd management, citing a 50,000‑person queue that stretched six kilometres and led to an average four‑hour wait to enter the temple. An electric pole fell at the halt where two trains were stopped, sparking a rumour that a live wire had touched people and pushed the crowd of women to fall on each other. Injured people were taken to local hospitals and police and district administration remained on site to prevent further incidents.
