Saudi Arabia, Iran and several other countries walked out during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York City. Netanyahu said the Palestinian Mission to the UN encouraged the walkout, while dozens of delegates left and many others remained seated. Empty seats included those of Sudan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Algeria, Malaysia, Montenegro, Kyrgyzstan, Jordan, Libya, the Marshall Islands and Mauritius. Netanyahu called the departing delegates “phony human rights protesters” and challenged the Iranian delegation over civilian deaths. A of countries that sent no delegates and the total number who walked out has not been confirmed.
