Shashi Tharoor Backs BRICS Summit as Diplomatic Power Move
· India · Hindustan Times, hindustantimes
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has publicly supported the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi, describing the event as a demonstration of India's diplomatic convening power. His comments follow criticism from party colleague P Chidambaram, who questioned the tangible benefits of India's participation in multilateral groupings like BRICS, SCO, G20, and QUAD. Tharoor argued that the summit provides a crucial platform for the Global South, noting that the 11-member bloc represents a majority of the world's population and 41 per cent of global GDP. The 18th summit is scheduled to take place this weekend at Bharat Mandapam in the capital. The BJP has criticised Chidambaram's stance on the summit.
Why it matters
The internal disagreement within the Congress party highlights differing views on India's foreign policy and the effectiveness of its engagement in multilateral forums.
