Shashi Tharoor Criticises Delhi Security Crackdown as Undeclared Emer-GenZ
· India · LiveMint, NDTV, The Hindu
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday slammed the heavy security deployment across Delhi ahead of a Cockroach Janta Party protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Tharoor described the restrictions as an undeclared Emer-GenZ, pointing to checkpoints every few hundred metres, concrete barriers, and spike strips on roads. He noted that authorities deployed 22,000 police and paramilitary personnel, cancelled 250 trains, and closed 45 metro stations across the national capital. The CJP organised the demonstration at Jantar Mantar to protest against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and raise voter list irregularities. Tharoor called for the immediate release of all detained individuals and urged the government to address the protesters' concerns.
Why it matters
The heavy-handed response highlights deepening friction between opposition leaders and law enforcement over civil liberties and public demonstrations in the national capital.
