She switched on Facebook livestream. 10 minutes later, Jharkhand Adivasi activist was dead

· India · Indian Express, Telegraph India

Nisha Bhagat, an Adivasi activist from Jharkhand, allegedly died by suicide during a 10-minute Facebook livestream in Ranchi. Bhagat, aged around 38, was vocal about tribal religion and Adivasi rights, and supported delisting converted tribals from the Scheduled Tribes list. During the livestream, she appeared distressed, spoke of fighting for her community alone, and expressed anger over online trolling and the term "dalal" (broker) used against her. She called the Pithoria police station inspector during the live session, stating her intent to take her life and questioning the unsolved robbery case at her home. Police later reached the spot and rushed her to RIMS hospital, where she was declared dead.

Why it matters

This incident highlights the pressures faced by activists, including online harassment and perceived lack of support, and has led to the BJP criticising the state government and police over their handling of the situation.
