Shopify Opens Checkout to Browser-Based AI Agents
· Technology · TechCrunch
E-commerce platform Shopify has announced that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on merchant sites, extending their capabilities beyond searching and adding items to carts. The update introduces three new tools — get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout — allowing agents to inspect checkouts, modify addresses or delivery options, and place orders after buyer authorization. Shopify previously supported WebMCP for storefronts and carts, but the new integration includes checkout functionality and Shop Pay support. Top AI agents such as Muse and Instinct have direct partnerships with Shopify for agentic commerce, with Instinct announced alongside the update. The feature is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants, leveraging the Universal Commerce Protocol to provide structured APIs for accurate order placement.
Why it matters
This update allows AI shopping agents to complete entire transactions independently, changing how consumers interact with online merchants and streamlining checkout processes across Shopify stores.
