· Sports · Times of India, NDTV Sports, Sportstar
Shubman Gill returns to New Zealand to lead the Indian side for the upcoming ODI series, marking a return to the country where he experienced his early career milestones. The 27-year-old captain previously played in New Zealand during the 2018 U-19 World Cup and made his ODI debut there in 2019. As India sharpens preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, Gill intends to use the series to gain experience across different venues and test the team's young bowling attack. While the top four batting positions remain settled, Gill noted that the team will maintain flexibility at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots depending on match situations.
Why it matters
This series serves as a critical testing ground for India's squad composition and young bowling talent ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
