· Sports · Times of India, NDTV Sports, ESPNCricinfo
India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill will return to action for Punjab in the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season, playing their second-round match against Chhattisgarh starting October 18. Gill missed Punjab's opening Ranji Trophy match against Assam in New Chandigarh, where former India U-19 captain Uday Saharan led the team. He was named ICC Men's Player of the Month for a record fifth time following his performances in the ODI series against the West Indies. Gill scored 110 in the first ODI and then smashed 223 off 133 balls, recording the fastest double-century ever, helping India chase 406 with eight wickets in hand and 39 balls to spare. The BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the ODI squad for the New Zealand tour will be picked in the next two to three days.
Why it matters
Gill's return strengthens Punjab's batting lineup in the Ranji Trophy, potentially improving their chances in the tournament. It also signals his readiness ahead of India's upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, where he is expected to be a key player.
