· Entertainment · Hindustan Times, NDTV
Sikkimese rapper Ugen Namgyal Bhutia, known as UNB, was allegedly attacked by a group of eight to ten men near Tiwari Gaon in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Dibang Valley district while returning from a festival performance in Anini. The attack occurred around 6pm on Monday when two vehicles with concealed number plates followed his car for nearly an hour before intercepting it. According to his manager Deep Dhar, the assailants struck the vehicle with rods, targeting UNB and him, while other team members were unharmed. UNB suffered head and facial injuries, including swelling around an eye, and underwent a medical examination; he is currently stable. Police registered an FIR under sections 126(2), 115(2), and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for wrongful restraint, voluntarily causing hurt, and criminal intimidation. The investigation is challenged by poor mobile connectivity and lack of witnesses in the secluded jungle area where the attack took place.
Why it matters
The attack highlights the vulnerability of artists and performers travelling through remote areas in Northeast India, raising concerns about their safety during public events. It also underscores ongoing challenges in law enforcement and evidence collection in regions with limited infrastructure and connectivity.
