Silkyara Rat Miners Offer Help for Nepal Tunnel Rescue

· World · Times of India, Al Jazeera

The team of 'rat miners' who gained national recognition for the 2023 Silkyara tunnel rescue has offered to assist in Nepal's flood-hit hydropower projects. At least 900 workers are missing across 12 projects in Nepal, with approximately 500 believed to be trapped inside tunnels blocked by debris. The miners' coordinator, Anand Kansal, has written to the Indian ambassador to Nepal to formally offer their manual excavation expertise. The team previously assisted in rescue operations at the Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel in Telangana in 2025. The miners, including Firoz Qureshi, stated they are prepared to deploy immediately if granted permission by Nepalese authorities.

Why it matters

The miners' specialized manual excavation skills could be critical in reaching workers trapped in debris-filled tunnels where heavy machinery is ineffective.
