Simultaneous 2029 Elections Possible With Constitutional Amendments

Holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections in 2029 is feasible if the Constitution is amended and state governments provide their support, according to P.P. Chaudhary, chairman of the joint parliamentary panel. The panel is currently reviewing the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Chaudhary stated that if the necessary constitutional changes are approved by 2028, the rollout of the 'One Nation, One Election' initiative could begin that same year. He noted that state governments must ultimately decide whether to dissolve their assemblies to align with the national poll cycle. The panel has reportedly interacted with civil society members across 10 states to gauge public opinion on the proposal.
