Sinkhole Opens on Service Road Near Gurgaon’s IFFCO Chowk

· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times, News18

A sinkhole emerged on a service road near IFFCO Chowk on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on Tuesday, prompting traffic police to cordon off the area. The NHAI noted that the subsidence may have been caused by a leaking GMDA sewer line beneath the road, leading to soil erosion. This incident follows severe waterlogging in Gurgaon caused by 75 mm of rainfall on Monday, which disrupted traffic across the city. Joint engineering teams from the NHAI and GMDA have begun inspections and ground stabilization work to prevent further structural damage.

Why it matters

The recurring road cave-ins and waterlogging highlight significant vulnerabilities in Gurgaon's civic infrastructure, posing ongoing safety risks to daily commuters.
