· Business · Indian Express, Economic Times
India’s mutual fund industry crossed a major milestone in August as systematic investment plan (SIP) accounts exceeded 10 crore for the first time, driven by a 19% rise in equity mutual fund inflows to ₹29,329 crore. The growth streak of positive equity inflows extended to 66 consecutive months, with SIP assets rising 2.8% to ₹18.61 lakh crore, accounting for 21.4% of total assets under management (AUM). Retail participation remained robust, with 26.54 lakh new folios added in August, pushing total retail folios to 28.35 crore. The industry’s AUM grew 1.5% month-on-month to ₹87.07 lakh crore, while SIP contributions reached ₹32,297 crore. The data, released by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), highlights sustained investor confidence despite market volatility.
Why it matters
This surge in SIP accounts and equity inflows signals growing retail participation in financial markets, empowering millions of Indian households to build long-term wealth through systematic investing. For mutual fund companies and asset managers, it underscores a maturing retail investor base, while policymakers may see it as a positive indicator of financial inclusion and economic resilience.
