Six Booked in Ballia After Man Pronounces Triple Talaq

· India · Hindustan Times, Zee News

Police in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, have registered an FIR against a man and five of his family members following allegations of triple talaq and dowry harassment. The complainant, Ruksar, stated that her husband, Mohammad Arif, pronounced triple talaq over the phone after she refused his demands for dowry. She further alleged that her in-laws assaulted her and expelled her and her minor daughter from their home. The case has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Dowry Prohibition Act. Superintendent of Police Dr Iraj Raja confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway.

Why it matters

This case highlights the ongoing legal enforcement against the practice of triple talaq, which the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional in 2017. It also underscores the continued prevalence of dowry-related violence and the legal protections available to women under Indian law.
