Six Students Drown During Ganesh Immersion in Sangareddy’s Peddakanjarla Village

· India · The Hindu, NDTV

Six students from the Sirisha Memorial Charitable Trust died after accidentally falling into a pond while immersing a Ganesh idol near Peddakanjarla village in Sangareddy district, Telangana, on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. when eight people, including the deceased, were participating in the immersion at a pond three kilometres from the orphanage. The victims—ranging from a Class X student to polytechnic and B.Tech learners—were residents of the trust, which houses 70 students from Class I to higher education. Patancheru MLA Gudem Mahipal Reddy directed officials to complete post-mortems by Thursday morning and arrange body transport to their hometowns, using his own funds for ambulances. The trust has conducted Ganesh immersions at the same location for the past 15 years.

Why it matters

The tragedy affects the families of the six deceased students, who hailed from Vijayawada, Warangal, and Kukatpally, and underscores the risks of unregulated immersion activities in rural areas. It also raises questions about safety protocols for vulnerable groups, such as orphanages, during religious events.
