Smaller Uttar Pradesh Parties Eye Congress Alliance Ahead of 2027 Polls
· India · India Today, NDTV
Several smaller opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh are reaching out to the Congress as the party presses the Samajwadi Party for a larger seat share ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Leaders including Apni Janta Party's Swami Prasad Maurya, Sanjay Chauhan, and Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) leader Pankaj Niranjan have recently met Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. Uttar Pradesh Congress in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam stated that the party is preparing across all 403 constituencies and wants seat-sharing finalised in October. While Maurya has sought around a dozen seats and wants to contest on his own party symbol, the Congress insists that all allied candidates contest on its symbol. The Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has kept his distance from these smaller outfits, asking the Congress to field candidates capable of winning.
Why it matters
The seat-sharing negotiations and realignment of smaller caste-based groups could reshape the opposition alliance dynamics in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the crucial 2027 Assembly elections.
