Smit Machchhar recovering in Dubai after mid-flight cockpit stabbing attack

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu, BBC News

Smit Machchhar, captain of flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, was stabbed multiple times by his co-pilot inside the cockpit mid-flight on Wednesday. Despite his injuries, Machchhar unlocked the cockpit door, allowing passengers to overpower the attacker and safely land the aircraft with 174 people on board. He is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Dubai. The family in Ghatkopar and Chembur, Mumbai, says they are proud but exhausted by the large media presence and swelling crowds outside their homes.

Why it matters

The incident highlights the vulnerability of commercial flight crews to in-flight security threats and has drawn global praise for Machchhar's quick thinking, with Prime Minister Modi crediting him for preventing a 9/11-style tragedy. His recovery and the family's distress over media intrusion underscore the human cost behind the hero narrative.
