· India · The Hindu, The Independent

Madurai police have taken Sarath Subramanian Shankar into custody from Puzhal Prison for interrogation regarding a series of bomb threat emails. The Tamil Nadu Counter Terrorism Wing previously arrested Sarath at the Chennai airport on July 22, 2026. Investigators accuse the former US-based software engineer of sending over 1,500 bomb threat emails between 2023 and 2025 targeting airports, educational institutions, political leaders, and senior police officials across India. According to the police, Sarath has admitted to issuing 20 of the threats tied to 31 cases registered by the Tamil Nadu Counter Terrorism Wing. Police forces from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh are also scheduled to take him into custody, and the Counter Terrorism Wing stated that all cases will soon be transferred to the NIA.

Why it matters

The case involves cross-state security investigations affecting critical infrastructure, airports, and educational institutions nationwide. The transfer of cases to the NIA signals a centralized federal probe into the origin and scale of the threat network.
