Software Error Skews UP MLC Voter Rolls, 158 Bizarre Names Found
· India · Indian Express, The Hindu, Hindustan Times
A software glitch in Uttar Pradesh's electoral roll system has generated 158 entries with bizarre names, including 'Ram ne Yadav ko maara', affecting 158 of 14.81 lakh entries in the Legislative Council voter rolls for graduate and teacher constituencies. The Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa, attributed the error to a combination of software translation failures and human negligence in verifying entries. Online registration for the first time was introduced for the Legislative Council elections, but the transliteration software mistakenly translated English names into Hindi sentences instead of phonetic reproduction. The CEO's office has demanded explanations from officials responsible for the verification lapses.
Why it matters
The accuracy of voter rolls is critical for fair elections in Uttar Pradesh, where 158 erroneous entries could impact representation in the Legislative Council and raise concerns about verification processes.
