Solomon Pappaiah Rejected 200 Film Offers After Sivaji

· Entertainment · The Hindu, Indian Express

Veteran Tamil scholar and orator Solomon Pappaiah passed away at the age of 90 in Madurai on September 11. Prof. Pappaiah became a household name across Tamil Nadu through his oratorical skills and television debates. He gained widespread recognition in cinema after appearing in the 2003 film Boys and playing Thondaiman in Rajinikanth’s Sivaji: The Boss. Despite receiving more than 200 film offers following his success in Sivaji, he declined them to focus entirely on literary and academic work. Superstar Rajinikanth paid tribute to the late scholar, noting his contribution to bringing the traditional Pattimandram debates to the common people.

Why it matters

His passing marks the loss of a towering figure who bridged elite Tamil literary traditions with mass audiences through television and cinema.
