Sonam Maskar won silver with India's women's 10m air rifle team at the Asian Games on Sunday, giving India its first medal of the event. Maskar scored 634.1 in the team event and finished sixth in the individual competition. Her father, Uttam Maruti Maskar, sold a 25 cent plot and a shop after the family moved from Mumbai to Kolhapur in 2020, when the pandemic hurt his milk supply business. He later bought her a new rifle and kit for more than ₹5 lakh in 2022 at a lower market price. Maskar began shooting at Tolani College in Andheri after her tenth-standard exams and trained under Rohit Hawaldar and Radhika Barle Hawaldar.
Why it matters
Maskar's team silver gave India its first medal at the Asian Games, while her sixth-place individual finish shows where she stands in the 10m air rifle field. Her family's sale of land and a shop shows the cost behind her route to the podium.
