South Korea Recalls Ambassador to Ukraine Over POW Disclosure
· World · Al Jazeera, BBC News
South Korea has decided to recall its ambassador to Kyiv following a dispute over the public disclosure of two North Korean prisoners of war (POW) transferred to South Korea. The South Korean government accused Ukraine of violating a nondisclosure agreement regarding the transfer, which took place in mid-September. Kyiv has denied the existence of any such agreement. The soldiers were captured in early 2025 while supporting Russian forces and subsequently requested to resettle in South Korea. South Korean officials stated the secrecy was necessary to protect the soldiers and their families from potential retaliation.
Why it matters
The diplomatic rift complicates relations between Seoul and Kyiv as South Korea balances its humanitarian aid to Ukraine with concerns over the safety of North Korean defectors.
