The United States and South Korea have agreed to shorten their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises by nearly a week, with the drills now scheduled to conclude on Friday instead of August 27. The drills, which began on August 17, are primarily computer-simulated command post exercises designed to prepare for regional security threats. Officials confirmed that the allies will also downsize certain joint field training components of the program. President Trump cited his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korea's decision not to join U.S. military efforts against Iran as reasons for the reduction.
