· Business · The Hindu, Times of India
South Western Railway (SWR) achieved its highest-ever freight loading for the month of September, handling 4.41 million tonnes. This figure represents a 5.9% increase compared to the 4.17 million tonnes recorded in September 2025. The cumulative freight loading for the first six months of the financial year reached 26.1 million tonnes, marking a 5.8% growth over the previous year. Iron ore remained the primary commodity, contributing 1.7 million tonnes to the monthly total, followed by pig iron, finished steel, and coal. Gross revenue for the zone rose to ₹870 crore in September, driven by a 15.91% increase in total earnings compared to the same month last year.
Why it matters
The record freight performance and revenue growth indicate improved operational efficiency and increased industrial demand for raw materials within the South Western Railway zone, which serves key economic hubs in Karnataka and surrounding regions.
