Southeast Asia GenAI Adoption Hits 243 Million Users
· Technology · CNBC
Generative AI adoption in Southeast Asia has reached 243 million users in less than three years, according to an e-Conomy SEA report by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company. This adoption rate covers 58% of the region's working population and is growing four times faster than the uptake of mobile internet. Despite the widespread use, only 1% to 2% of the population pays for personal AI subscriptions. Businesses are capturing commercial value instead by using AI to drive e-commerce conversion rates and handle routine customer inquiries. Florian Hoppe, a partner at Bain & Company, noted that consumers often pay indirectly for AI through the purchase of products developed using the technology.
Why it matters
The rapid enterprise adoption of AI is reshaping digital commerce and operational efficiency across Southeast Asia as the region's digital economy approaches $368 billion in gross merchandise value this year.
