Southern Railway Plans New Accessway to Chromepet Railway Station

· India · The Hindu, Indian Express

Southern Railway, in collaboration with CUMTA, has proposed a new pathway to improve access to the Chromepet railway station from the Radha Nagar subway. The current subway is located approximately 120 metres from the platform ends, leaving pedestrians without a direct or safe connection to the station. Officials noted that allowing passengers to walk along the tracks between suburban and fast lines would be operationally unviable and pose significant safety risks. The proposal follows concerns raised by residents regarding the lack of safe access to the platforms. The Madras High Court has already disposed of a related matter, directing that the representation be handled in accordance with the law.

Why it matters

The project aims to eliminate dangerous pedestrian movement along railway tracks, directly improving safety for daily commuters in the Chromepet and Radha Nagar areas of Chennai.
