Southwest Monsoon Withdraws From Entire Country as Northeast Rains Begin

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

The southwest monsoon withdrew from the entire country on Thursday, according to the India Meteorological Department. Simultaneously, the northeast monsoon commenced over southern parts of India, bringing widespread showers to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka. The IMD records the southwest monsoon season from June 1 until September 30, with October 15 marking the normal date for complete withdrawal based on the long period average. Last year, the monsoon withdrew on October 16, while withdrawal occurred on October 15 in 2024. Meanwhile, intense showers were also recorded across northwest India on Thursday, including parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi, due to a prevailing western disturbance and two cyclonic circulations.

Why it matters

The complete withdrawal of the southwest monsoon marks the official transition to winter crop sowing conditions across northern and central states, while the onset of the northeast monsoon provides critical late-year irrigation and water storage for peninsular India.
