SpaceX Renews India Starlink Pitch as Security Approvals Remain Pending

· Technology · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

SpaceX Vice President of Starlink Business Operations Lauren Dreyer has renewed the company's pitch to launch satellite broadband in India as a last-mile internet access solution. Speaking at the India Mobile Congress in New Delhi on Tuesday, Dreyer noted that Starlink has already established ground infrastructure across 20 gateway sites with hundreds of antennas. While Starlink has secured a Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite authorisation from the Department of Telecommunications, final security approvals from the Union government remain pending. The required security measures mandate that SpaceX disable Starlink receivers purchased outside India and terminals sold in India when taken abroad. Dreyer stated that the company has built its operations to comply with Indian data localization and security regulations.

Why it matters

Starlink's pending entry into India's broadband market will significantly reshape rural and urban internet connectivity once regulatory hurdles are cleared.
