Sporadic Protests and Detentions Continue Across Delhi

· India · The Hindu, Indian Express

Hundreds of protesters, including Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas and AISA president Neha Bora, were detained in New Delhi on Sunday as demonstrations against the special intensive revision of electoral rolls and CEC Gyanesh Kumar entered their second consecutive day. Police deployed heavy security and barricaded central Delhi to prevent demonstrators from reaching Jantar Mantar, making Connaught Place the epicentre of the rallies. Shoppers trickled back into Connaught Place after shops reopened and metro services resumed following closures on Saturday. The Cockroach Janta Party, which called the protests, condemned the police action as an emergency-like situation and vowed to continue demonstrations. Separately, four Hindu Raksha Dal members were arrested after a video surfaced showing a man and woman being assaulted.

Why it matters

The ongoing protests and heavy security deployment disrupt daily movement and commercial activity in central Delhi, highlighting intense political friction over electoral roll revisions.
