Spotify Removes 50 Million AI Spam Songs From Recommendations

· Technology · Billboard, Engadget, NBC News

Spotify announced on Tuesday that it has removed more than 50 million AI-generated spam tracks from its recommendation system. The platform utilized a combination of upload patterns, metadata, listener feedback, and third-party AI detection tools to identify the content. This figure comes on top of the 75 million tracks that Spotify has previously removed entirely from its service. In addition to clamping down on unauthorized AI content, the company reported that over 300,000 artists have received its human-artist verification badge. Spotify is also developing its own AI remixing tool, having recently secured licensing agreements with music publishers and labels including Universal Music Group, Merlin, Kobalt, and Believe.

Why it matters

The cleanup marks a major enforcement push by streaming platforms to curb low-effort automated tracks and protect revenue shares for human artists.
