Sri Lanka Refuses Aid to Iranian Ships Over US Sanction Risks
· World · Times of India, The Hindu
Sri Lanka has declined to provide immediate assistance to 19 Iranian vessels anchored 24 nautical miles off its coast, citing the risk of secondary US sanctions. The crews on the ships are currently facing shortages of food, water, and fuel. Foreign ministry spokesperson Thushara Rodrigo stated that the nation must prioritise its national interests, noting that local companies supplying the vessels could face penalties. While the US and Iran have been in conflict since February 2026, Sri Lanka confirmed it has received no direct warnings from Washington regarding this specific situation. The Iranian Embassy has not provided information regarding the status of the vessels.
Why it matters
The decision highlights the difficult diplomatic and economic balancing act Sri Lanka faces while managing relations with both the US and Iran during an ongoing regional conflict.
