Sri Lankan President Assures India Territory Will Not Be Used Against Its Security
· World · Hindustan Times, India Today
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake assured Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Colombo that Sri Lanka will never allow its territory to be used for activities inimical to India's security interests. Singh arrived in Colombo on Tuesday for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening maritime and defence cooperation between the two nations. During the meetings, both sides signed three agreements, including an MoU to upgrade six L70 air defence guns for the Sri Lankan Air Force under an Indian government grant. The two leaders also virtually inaugurated three Bailey bridges constructed by the Indian military in the island nation. Dissanayake expressed gratitude for India's assistance under Operation Sagar Bandhu following Cyclone Ditwah and acknowledged New Delhi's comprehensive rehabilitation package.
Why it matters
The security assurances and defence pacts reinforce bilateral strategic ties and counter Chinese infrastructure influence in Sri Lanka, directly safeguarding India's southern maritime frontier.
