Sridhar Vembu: Rising Memory and AI Token Prices Hinder Business

· Technology · Times of India, Yahoo Finance

Zoho co‑founder Sridhar Vembu warned that a 500 % jump in computer memory prices has made running businesses difficult, citing a 64GB DDR5‑5600 kit that rose from US$191 in August 2025 to US$1,118 in August 2026. The report notes a 128GB DDR5‑6400 kit climbed from US$329 to US$3,399, while DDR4 kits increased 120‑177 % year‑on‑year. Vembu said companies have held back on passing costs to customers, but that staying flat is becoming unsustainable. He added that the era of “free” memory is over and that software and AI systems must become more memory efficient, calling for smarter compilers and safer code.

Why it matters

Higher memory and AI token costs raise the operating expenses of Indian software and AI startups, potentially leading to higher service prices and impacting the competitiveness of Indian tech firms.
