Stalin urges Murmu to initiate action against CEC Gyanesh Kumar over deleted Tamil Nadu electors

· India · The Hindu, Zee News

DMK chief M.K. Stalin on Wednesday wrote to President Droupadi Murmu, seeking action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar for deleting 97.37 lakh electors from Tamil Nadu's electoral rolls during the 2025 Special Intensive Revision. Stalin alleged the deletion was executed without the knowledge of two Election Commissioners, rendering it unauthorised and illegal. He claimed the deletions skewed results in several constituencies, weakening one party and strengthening another. He also urged the President to advise the ECI against using 2026 electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu and to restore pre-SIR rolls for future elections in the state.

Why it matters

The controversy directly threatens the integrity of Tamil Nadu's electoral rolls, potentially disenfranchising nearly one crore voters and altering constituency outcomes ahead of upcoming elections. Stakeholders, including political parties and voters, face uncertainty over the validity of election results if the deletions are upheld.
