Stripe to buy OpenRouter as fintech expands deeper into AI

· Technology · CNBC, Reuters, Bloomberg

Stripe agreed to acquire AI‑model routing startup OpenRouter for about $7.5 billion, with $1.5 billion earmarked for the founders. The deal follows OpenRouter’s last $113 million round that valued the company at roughly $1.3 billion. OpenRouter is popular among developers using open‑weight models from Chinese labs such as DeepSeek and Z.ai, which are cheaper than proprietary U.S. models. Stripe said it will use OpenRouter to “route requests intelligently and spend tokens efficiently”, aiming to cut AI operating costs for its customers. This acquisition is part of Stripe’s broader strategy that earlier this year included a $1.1 billion purchase of stable‑coin platform Bridge. Stripe’s valuation remains near $160 billion, making it one of the world’s most valuable fintechs.

Why it matters

By adding OpenRouter to its portfolio, Stripe will give businesses—including Indian tech firms—that rely on AI models a tool to reduce token costs and manage performance, potentially changing how they deploy AI solutions.
