Student Wellbeing Dips in Senior Grades Across India, Study Shows

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

Student wellbeing across India drops sharply from 62 per cent in Grade 8 to 43 per cent in senior grades, driven by mounting anxiety, low energy, and frustration in Grades 11 and 12. Findings from the 'Student Well-being Pulse Report 2026' by the IC3 Institute show that girls carry a heavier burden of anxiety and low confidence than boys. The survey of 8,515 students across India also recorded declines in happiness from 65 to 48 per cent, confidence from 64 to 47 per cent, and motivation from 64 to 49 per cent. Only six per cent of surveyed students reach out to formal school counsellors, with most turning to friends and family instead. Additionally, 52 per cent of students report receiving structured career counselling, while 33 per cent experience anxiety specifically due to unclear career guidance.

Why it matters

The steep decline in mental wellbeing among senior school students points to critical gaps in institutional mental health support and career counselling across Indian schools. Addressing these pressures is vital for the psychological health of teenagers preparing for high-stakes higher education transitions.
