Study Finds Highly Intelligent Women Face Workplace Penalties
· Business · Times of India, The Guardian
New research published on May 18, 2026, reveals that highly intelligent women frequently encounter a social penalty at work that men with similar cognitive abilities do not experience. The multi-study investigation examined more than 800 individuals across 140 teams to evaluate the intersection of gender and cognitive ability. Researchers found that highly capable women reported strained relationships with teammates, received less emotional and practical support, and faced higher rates of workplace victimization. Conversely, men with comparable intellectual abilities did not face this pattern and frequently received additional support from colleagues. Gender stereotypes shape these workplace interactions, as colleagues often expect women to be warm and accommodating rather than overtly analytical.
Why it matters
Professional women possessing strong intellectual capabilities face distinct interpersonal disadvantages and reduced support in corporate environments.
