Study Links Very Hot Beverages to Increased Cancer Risk
· World · The Independent, BBC News
A major study from the University of Oxford, financed by Cancer Research UK, has found that drinking very hot beverages increases the risk of developing oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 980,000 adults and found that participants who consumed very hot drinks faced approximately three times the risk compared to those who preferred warm beverages. Experts believe the high temperatures damage the cells lining the oesophagus, potentially facilitating cancer development. The study suggests that allowing drinks to cool or adding cold milk can negate this risk. The researchers emphasized that smoking and alcohol consumption remain the most significant risk factors for this type of cancer.
