Sukhbir Singh Badal Signals Openness To New Punjab Alliance
· India · Times of India, The Hindu
Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal stated on Friday that his party is open to forming alliances with groups that share its ideology for the 2027 Punjab assembly elections. The announcement followed remarks by Union home minister Amit Shah, who predicted an NDA government in the state. Badal explicitly ruled out any potential tie-up with the Congress or the Aam Aadmi Party, labelling them the primary opponents of Punjab. While speculation about a BJP-SAD reunion has intensified, Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon maintained that the party is currently preparing to contest all 117 seats independently. The two parties previously ended a 24-year alliance in 2020 over the now-repealed farm laws.
Why it matters
A potential reunion between the BJP and SAD could significantly alter the electoral math in Punjab, impacting the vote share of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress.
