Sunni Management Association Criticises Kerala Waqf Board Reconstitution

· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times

The Sunni Management Association (SMA) has publicly criticised the Kerala government for excluding two Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama groups from the newly reconstituted State Waqf Board. SMA district president K.V. Siddique Faizy stated that the exclusion is unfair given the significant role these organisations play in managing over 20,000 madrasas and thousands of local community units across Kerala. Mr. Faizy questioned the decision to include representatives from the Mujahid and Jamaat-e-Islami factions while sidelining the Samastha groups, which he claims hold a wider presence in the state's Muslim community. He alleged that the selection process suggests political motives and urged the government to ensure fair representation for all eligible organisations. The SMA has called for immediate government intervention to include the two Samastha representatives in the Board.

Why it matters

The dispute over Waqf Board representation directly impacts the management of religious and educational institutions for a significant portion of Kerala's Muslim community.
