Sunulok Hills Killings Reopen Meitei-Kuki Tensions in Manipur

· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times

An official probe has revealed that the October 19 killings in the Khongbal Sunulok Hills, which reopened the Meitei-Kuki fault line in Manipur, may have been triggered by a local dispute over felling trees. Villagers had reportedly complained to militant groups that Meitei men were regularly cutting wood in the area along the Imphal East-Kangpokpi border. Armed militants and village volunteers then stopped a vehicle carrying Meitei men, and opened fire when they attempted to flee, killing three people. The Manipur Police have arrested three village volunteers and recovered eight hidden weapons for forensic examination. Security forces also carried out a surprise inspection of the Sinai Camp in Semol village following the incident.

Why it matters

The renewed violence threatens fragile peace efforts in Manipur and risks escalating community fault lines between Meiteis and Kukis across the state.
