Supreme Court Acquits Railway Official in 20-Year-Old Bribery Case

The Supreme Court has acquitted a former Divisional Security Commissioner of the Railway Protection Force in a corruption case dating back to 2005. A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and N Kotiswar Singh flagged the CBI's "serious lacuna and impatience" in its investigation, noting that the agency failed to prove the recovered money was intended as a bribe for the official. The court observed that the trap was executed in an "extraordinarily speedy manner" immediately after the complaint was filed, without allowing the process to run its full course. The verdict overturns the May 2024 orders of the Kerala High Court, which had previously affirmed the official's conviction by a special trial court. The judges concluded that the trial court had ignored significant doubts regarding the execution of the trap.
