Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Plea on NGT Members' Tenure Before Sep 8

· India · Hindustan Times, PTI

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to schedule an urgent hearing regarding the tenure of members of the National Green Tribunal before September 8. The petition was filed after concerns were raised that three zonal benches, including the Southern and Western Zone Benches, could cease functioning once the court-granted extension expires. The NGT Act does not permit single-member benches, and without further extensions or fresh appointments, these benches will become non-functional. Chief Justice Surya Kant stated that a new law is now in place, but appointments under this framework cannot be made overnight. The hearing, originally scheduled for September 15, will now take place before September 8.

Why it matters

The urgent hearing could prevent the shutdown of key NGT benches, ensuring continued environmental adjudication across affected regions.
