Supreme Court Appoints Justice Ranjana Desai as Sole Mediator in KG Basin Gas Dispute
· Business · The Hindu, Live Law
The Supreme Court on Friday appointed former apex court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai as sole mediator in the Krishna-Godavari basin gas migration dispute between Reliance Industries Limited, its consortium partners, and the Union government. A Special Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant made the appointment after Attorney-General R. Venkataramani informed the court that a viable solution could not be reached among the parties. The Bench requested Justice Desai to seek assistance from two domain experts to be suggested by the parties, given the dispute's commercial complexity. RIL, represented by senior advocate A.M. Singhvi, agreed to the mediation proposal. The court directed parties to contact Justice Desai by Saturday to schedule proceedings. RIL has consistently refuted the Centre's claim that it "siphoned" gas that migrated from ONGC's neighbouring blocks into RIL's KG-D6 block.
Why it matters
The mediation could resolve a long-standing commercial dispute affecting India's domestic gas production and revenue sharing between a major private conglomerate and the state-owned ONGC, with implications for energy security and investor confidence in the hydrocarbon sector.
