Supreme Court Asks CBSE to Consider One-Time Reprieve for Class 6 Three-Language Policy

The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Central Board of Secondary Education to consider a one-time reprieve for current Class 6 students under its three-language policy. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant suggested the exemption to prevent students from facing mandatory board examinations in a third language when they reach Class 10. The court also directed the CBSE to examine whether the third language should start in Class 6 or earlier in Class 3 or 4. Additionally, the bench sought a concrete roadmap from Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati regarding teacher availability, course material, and infrastructure preparedness before full implementation. The intervention follows petitions filed by parents challenging the sudden rollout of the policy under the National Education Policy 2020.
