The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Election Commission of India to state by Monday how long it will take to resolve the dispute between rival factions of the All India Trinamool Congress over the party symbol and name. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant noted that while the ECI holds the authority to issue interim orders during ongoing bypolls in West Bengal's Nandigram and Rejinagar, the main dispute should reach a final decision before upcoming municipal elections in November. The leadership tussle reached the Supreme Court after the ECI's September 17 interim order froze the original party identity and allotted separate symbols to the rival groups.
