Supreme Court Cancels Bail of Shiv Sena Corporator in Doctor Assault Case

The Supreme Court has cancelled the bail granted by the Bombay High Court to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, accused of assaulting a doctor at Dombivli’s Shastri Nagar Municipal Hospital. The court also stayed the High Court order granting bail on a plea by the Maharashtra government. Mhatre and four others were charged after a dispute over treatment of a pregnant woman on July 6 led to assault on doctors and nurses. They face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for assault, criminal intimidation, and offences against women’s dignity, plus violations of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act and Police Act. The Supreme Court said the message must go “loud and clear” that the medical fraternity cannot be touched. Mhatre had been staying in Goa after getting conditional bail in August, with conditions to remain outside Maharashtra until the chargesheet was filed.
